Downtown Crown is the exciting new development conveniently located just off of Route 270 and Route 370. A great community to live in, and walk to high-end restaurants, stores and entertainment. Crown sits across the street from Rio and the Washingtonian Center. A mix of primarily townhomes and single family homes, the development has taken shape on the former farm of the late Charlie Crown.
The community consists of Downtown Crown, Crown Central, Crown East, and Crown West. The old silo and the original 1894 Farm House will remain. I happened to have the pleasure and privilege to live directly across the street from Charlie’s little brick house just off of Fields Road in the center of the development. The original, roughly 270 acre farm was sort of an oasis across the street from Rio.
I was walking my chocolate lab India one day and decided to go over and say hello to Charlie. We talked for about an hour that first day, and he invited me to walk across the street and have the run of the farm anytime I wanted. I never once saw another person on the farm other than Charlie and his family. So it was quite a privilege. We talked several mornings a week, and he would always step inside and grab me some fresh eggs before going back to my townhouse. Charlie Crown could have sold the farm and walked away tens of millions of dollars before he passed away, but he never did… So to see the development take shape has mixed feelings for me. But change happens. And to see the quality of the restaurants and the overall development makes me feel pretty good. Yes, it’s a contrast from Charlie Crown, who didn’t care about beautiful homes and nice restaurants. Just a simple man who lived the farming life from the day he was born. But it was inevitable.
The town home prices run from $500,000 up to nearly $700,000. It all depends on what options you choose. The single-family homes are going to run over $1.1 million, again depending upon the options that you choose to finish off your home. There are some apartments as well right next to and above the stores. 2,250 homes have been approved. The community will consist of Downtown Crown, Crown Central, Crown East, and Crown West. The old silo and the original 1894 farm house will remain, with the house being renovated and sold. KB Home, M/I Homes, Pulte Homes, Ryland Homes, and Wormald Homes are the builders. Michael Harris homes will also be building a unique 3-story condo with each unit having some outdoor living space including rooftop terraces, something they are known for. This should be quite spectacular.
Downtown Crown has a fresh energetic feel to it. There will be a pool, and outdoor grassy areas and pass for walking and running. It’s just a 1/4 mile to get onto Route 270, and back road access to Shady Grove and Rockville Pike. There is also a Metro shuttle that runs throughout the day to Shady Grove Metro. Living in the community also allows you to walk across the street to the Rio Center. Providing a boardwalk atmosphere during the summer, with live music both Friday and Saturday nights. The water area has paddleboats. There’s a little train that runs around the water for the youngsters, and even a merry-go-round. There’s also a movie , Barnes & Nobles, Target and multiple hotels. Of course, with all that will be going on at Downtown Crown, including all the restaurants and shopping, you may not make it across the street to Rio…But options are nice.
