Fort Sumner is a community with tradition and a very active neighborhood association. The community is located just South of Massachusetts Ave, about a 1/4 mile East of the Potomac River. The 111 single family home community was built in 1956 on the site of a Civil War fort with the same name. The fort was torn down to allow the fifteen different builders to begin construction. Many of the original split-level and ramblers remain, however most have been renovated and have additions.
Then C&O Canal is a short walk from Fort Sumner. Many community residents use the path for walking and biking. The Capital Crescent Trail is also a short walk from the community. The trail is an old rail trail project running though the Northwest DC and Maryland. It is a very popular spot for local cyclists and rollerbladers. During weekdays, bike commuters use the CCT to travel between Downtown DC and the Northwest Suburbs. The southern 7 miles between Georgetown and Bethesda has a 9-foot wide asphalt surface and is in excellent condition. The northern Georgetown Branch extension is a crushed gravel surface running the final 4 miles between Bethesda and Silver Spring. Fine schools serve the Fort Sumner community: Wood Acres Elementary, Thomas W. Pyle Middle, and Walt Whitman High School. Walt Whitman High School is ranked 2nd within Maryland.
